his
election year, the Spellman Museum will celebrate American
politics with the exhibit "Effecting Political Change:
Elections, Revolutions, and Propaganda." Highlights
include examinations of revolutions in China, Cuba, Russia
and elsewhere, self-rule movements in Africa and Asia, and
a display of stamps and ephemera related to U.S. presidents.
With a collection of over 2 million postage stamps from hundreds
of governments, you could say the Spellman Museum has one
of the largest collections of political documents in New
England. Stamps reflect a country's history, self-image,
and aspirations, and so they are often miniature documents
of a country's political history

Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History, founded in
1960, is an independent, not-for-profit cultural organization
(501(c)(3)) that promotes knowledge and understanding of
world history and geography through the study of stamps,
letters, and other artifacts. Central to the museum's philosophy
is that real objects, direct experience, and enjoyment are
gateways to learning.
The
museum's educational mission is advanced through exhibitions,
a resource center and library, and programs for schools,
scouts, families, and the general public. The museum is also
a partner in the Regis College Museum Studies Program providing
formal classroom support and practicum and internship experiences
for students.
The Spellman Museum, housed in a 17,000 square foot building
built for the purpose in 1963, is the nation's oldest stamp
museum. The collection includes more than 2,000,000 items
including those from President Dwight D. Eisenhower, violinist
Jascha Heifetz, and General Matthew Ridgway. The library
contains about 8,000 monographs, pamphlets, and auction catalogues,
and several hundred periodical titles.
