his
exhibit will focus on the Waltham Watch, the first widely-available
and inexpensive timepiece. With the beginnings of the industrial
revolution in Waltham, time became a more important aspect
of life. One had to be at work "on time." Remuneration
for work was defined by the hours put in on the job. Before
the Waltham Watch, watches were expensive pieces of fine
jewelry, available to the realtively few. Waltham put a watch
in everyone's pocket, and in doing so, radically changed
our notions of time and “on time”.
